چکیده

Sitting stability is maintained by continuous and intermittent activation of trunk and lower limb muscles. However, spinal cord injury (SCI) can result in paralysis of the trunk muscles and affects sitting balance. Currently, chest straps and trunk braces are used to correct sitting after SCI. In addition to these passive devices, functional electrical stimulation (FES) could be used to artificially contract trunk muscles and regulate sitting balance. The objectives of this research project were to: (1) investigate neuromuscular synergies of the trunk during perturbed sitting; (2) investigate the effects of anticipation of the perturbation on trunk muscle responses; (3) compare sitting balance between ablebodied individuals and people with SCI; and (4) examine the effects of electrical stimulation of trunk muscles on sitting balance. The first deliverable (Chapter 2) of this project was the development of neural network models that encode trunk muscle responses during perturbed quiet sitting. These models describe complex neuromuscular synergies of the trunk and allow us to understand which muscles are used to stabilize

The Additive Effects of Core Muscle Strengthening and Trunk NMES on Trunk Balance in Stroke Patients.

OBJECTIVE To investigate an additive effect of core muscle strengthening (CMS) and trunk neuromuscular electrical stimulation (tNEMS) on trunk balance in stroke patients. METHODS Thirty patients with acute or subacute stroke who were unable to maintain static sitting balance for >5 minutes were enrolled and randomly assigned to 3 groups, i.e., patients in the CMS (n=10) group received additio...

Multidirectional quantification of trunk stiffness and damping during unloaded natural sitting.

Trunk instability during sitting is a major problem following neuromuscular injuries such as stroke and spinal cord injury. In order to develop new strategies for alleviating this problem, a better understanding of the intrinsic contributions of the healthy trunk to sitting control is needed. As such, this study set out to propose and validate a novel methodology for determining multidirectiona...

The effect of postural control and balance on femoral anteversion in children with spastic cerebral palsy

[Purpose] The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between femoral anteversion and functional balance and postural control in children with spastic cerebral palsy. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty children with spastic cerebral palsy (mean age=12.4 ± 4.5) with grosss motor functional classification system levels I, II, and III were recruited for this study. Functional balance was ...

Audiovisual Biofeedback-Based Trunk Stabilization Training Using a Pressure Biofeedback System in Stroke Patients: A Randomized, Single-Blinded Study

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of audiovisual biofeedback-based trunk stabilization training using a pressure biofeedback system (PBS) in stroke patients. Forty-three chronic stroke patients, who had experienced a stroke more than 6 months ago and were able to sit and walk independently, participated in this study. The subjects were randomly allocated to an experimental gro...
